How to Stay Sane During Your PT Practical Exams: 6 Tips

Practical exams can be so stressful and scary, but they don't have to be. With the right mindset and strategy, you can approach test day feeling confident and ready. Here are six tips to help you stay calm and perform at your best during your practical exams.

1. Practice with a Classmate

While practicing with a friend or family member might be helpful, working with a classmate is even better. They understand the content and can give you critical feedback on what you may have missed or where you can improve.

2. Repetition is Key

Repetition helps you make complex skills feel second nature. The more you practice common techniques—like joint mobilizations, soft tissue techniques, or special tests—the smoother they will become. Muscle memory is your best friend here. Keep practicing until you can perform these skills confidently without hesitation.

3. Verbalize Everything

During your exam, you’ll need to explain what you're doing as you perform each task. Practicing verbalizing each step out loud as you perform it is crucial. Explain your reasoning behind each technique, and connect it to the underlying anatomy or pathology. This not only helps your examiner understand your thought process but also reinforces your learning.

4. Time Yourself

Many practical exams are timed, and real-life patient care will be as well! Practice completing each task within the allotted time to get comfortable working under pressure. Set a timer and challenge yourself to finish each component within the time frame. This can sometimes be the hardest part to master, but the more you practice, the more confident you will feel.

5. Simulate Exam Day

One of the best ways to reduce test-day anxiety is to simulate the actual exam environment. Practice in the same room where the exam will take place, if possible. Set up a mock station, wear professional attire, and mimic the conditions you’ll face on exam day. This will help you feel more comfortable when it's time for the real thing and will reduce surprises.

6. Stay Calm and Trust Yourself

On the day of the exam, the best thing you can do is stay calm and focused. You've put in the work to prepare—now trust yourself! If you come across something you're unsure about, take a deep breath, stay calm, and keep moving forward. Trust your training and knowledge.
